Playbutton

Playbutton, in their own words is ‘a wearable button that plays music. A record that plays itself. The content is pre-recorded and cannot be changed. Like an album the sequence of the album can not be altered.’ An interesting, simple idea for distributing music. (via @alednotjones)

Mixtape 05 / Andrew Telling

It’s that time of year and thanks to Andrew Telling we are in a giving mood. The man has just released the second part of his Human Resources Mixtape series.

Enjoy.

Süveyda

‘Light and dark, noise and calm, beauty, decay, pain and hope–these are the shattering contrasts that propel our lives ahead in the boundless, throbbing river of existence. None of us knows what the next moment will bring, the raptures and terrifying discoveries born with every choice. And yet, in the alternation of day and night, in the ebb and tide of the oceans, in the constant expansion and quiet contraction of our lungs in and out with each breath–we know our journey is not random chaos but a journey where every shouting supernova, every trembling cell, returns to the one perfect mystery from which we all come and go.’

Limit To Your Love

New video for man of the moment James Blake directed by Martin de Thurah.

Ariel

Our friends at Field have just created a digital dance performance exploring the eternal struggle of good and evil, for Stateless‘ latest single Ariel, which is soon to be released on Ninja Tune.
FIELD animated the two opponent characters of the song as surreal human figures, drawing dynamic sculptures into space. They collaborated with professional dancer Dominic North to record an impromptu interpretation of the song in a motion capture studio. There is a really interesting ‘making of’ video which can be found here.
The work was commissioned by Oscar&Ewan.

MmmHmm

This great new video for Flying Lotus’s track MmmHmm landed in my inbox this morning. Directed by Special Problems and commissioned by Warp Films, the video features an object that looks strongly influenced by the Mandelbrot set. Truly memorising.

Fabrice Lig

Sawdust have recently produced the design for ‘Genesis of a deep sound’ the latest album from ‘Fabrice Lig’ on label Fine Art recordings — It’s available on CD and 12” vinyl.

The album ‘Genesis of a Deep Sound’ is heavily focused on the ‘Genesis’ meaning the beginning, birth or creation. As Techno is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan. Many different styles now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built. The venues for this movement were predominantly held in old abandoned warehouses — Sawdust felt by capturing those run-down, yet beautiful open spaces, they could visualise the essence of the title ‘Genesis of a Deep Sound’.

They also produced a custom typeface to reflect the nature of electronic based music, one of beautiful compositions of sound and layering. The result is an interesting composition of form and colour, and by making the circular shapes key lines, it added an ‘imaginary’ third colour tone although still set in black.

The front of the Record has graphic indicators overlaid onto the image that when matched to the back spell the word ‘Genesis’.

Sonic Landscapes

Whoah! Since we last featured the work of our friend Alex McLeod, he has taken his sonic landscapes to a whole new level. The Toronto based artist creates 3D landscapes using a number of software programs, three or four in total for each artwork. Some programs are good for sculpting, some for fluid simulation others for rendering.

For any locals, he has two solo shows opening soon on August 26th at Angell Gallery (Toronto) and September 3rd at Anno Domini (San Jose).

Dancing Pigeons

This is the latest music video from the Dancing Pigeons, directed by Tomas Mankovsky. Born in Poland in 1979, he moved to Sweden at the age of one and grew up drawing crazy inventions and dreaming up wildcat schemes. When he got older he started working at Ogilvy in Stockholm before attending Beckmans College of Advertising.

Signed to Blink in 2009 Tomas has created a stunningly visual short “Sorry I’m Late” to follow up his heart-wrenching self-produced short “Little Big Love”. Still pushing brain-boundaries at all times Tomas spends his spare time writing film scripts, launching a range of Tetris-shaped bathroom tiles and inventing things, most recently a domino that generates sound.

The Suburbs (8 Alternative Covers)

Gabriel Jones recently photographed Arcade Fire’s most recent album cover entitled The Suburbs. These images where taken during a road trip in various suburbs in Texas followed by a studio shoot in Montreal where the selected suburb images where then projected on a large projection screen. The car and band members where positioned in front of the various suburb landscapes. This series of images are exploring a north American suburb experience and the memory that one can have from their suburban youth.

Gabriel’s images where also used for a postcard which Arcade Fire used to send out to magazines informing them about their upcoming shows and news about the album release. The series was art directed by Vincent Morisset and designed by Caroline Robert.

Thanks for the drop Gabriel.

You can’t get blood out of a stone…

You may know be familiar with photographer Shaun Bloodworth through his work with Human Resources favourite and regular cohort Give Up Art, and last week Shaun released the short film ‘Minds Locked Together’ exploring the Electronic music scene in Sheffield. Filmed over a loose two month period, taking in venues from around Sheffield , from organised club nights to underground raves, it features everyone from performers and promoters to the passionate, committed paying audience.

Minds locked Together is a look into the passion and love of club nights and electronic music that is going on not only in Sheffield, but all around the globe. With a style of filming that is very close to Shaun’s still work, be sure to check the 15 short on Shaun’s site here.

The Creators Project

A joint partnership between Intel and Vice, The Creators Project is ‘a new network dedicated to the celebration of creativity and culture across media. . .a modern day media channel that we will continually identify and celebrate the work of visionary artists wherever they are.’ Will be interesting to see how this develops, with a great list of ‘creators‘ already online including Mark Ronson, Trevor Jackson and Richie Hawtin.

In The Summer

Either I’m trippin’ or this is the latest music video from our friend Tobias Stretch. The video was shot entirely using a Canon 7D for the track ‘In The Summer’ by Crystal Fighters. Love it.

Thanks for the tip Toby.
