This is a beautifully atmospheric collaborative short film by Andrew Telling and Owen Richards that documents photographer Robin Friend working on his ‘Slaughterhouse’ series. The short was shot on location deep beneath the hills of North Wales.

Lyken

Lyken is a multidisciplinary artist living in Glasgow, who divides his time between painting and composing electronic music. A notable pioneer, he was among the first to begin writing graffiti in Scotland during the eighties.

His gestural paintings toy with scale and time, capturing the turbulent events and cycles of a living cosmos. These are worlds within worlds, chemical universes revealed at a microscopic level. Taking influences from cellular division and decay, bacterial spread and meteorological phenomena, themes of mutation and metamorphosis are explored in vibrant forms.

Like his art, his latest album ‘Bit Rot’ reﬂects this same detail. Decayed sounds and transmissions shimmer in space, a melodic sea of scientiﬁc musical patterns that chime with that certain universal emotion.

Dark Matters brings together the work of ten internationally acclaimed contemporary artists who employ a range of technologies, media and machinery. In an exhibition populated by half-seen spectres, visual riddles and distorted reflections, artists engage with ideas surrounding shadow, darkness and illusion. The works are united by themes of temporality, absence, truth, mortality and wonder. On show at the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester. 24 Sept 2011 – 15 Jan 2012.

Charles Anderson

Charles Anderson is an Edinburgh-based painter whose work explores the role of painting throughout history, and its place in contemporary art. By juxtaposing information and imagery taken from all aspects of contemporary life, he develops new and critical definitions, often with a satirical twist. His paintings are reminiscent of the weathered and layered effect of street advertising and billboards, which he re-creates through the sole use of paint.

A Life Underwater

Danny Cooke’s Ray: A Life Underwater is an affectionate portrait by of one man’s deep sea diving career told through his extraordinary collection of marine artefacts.

Like a modern-day pirate, 75-year-old Ray Ives has been scouring the seabed for treasure his whole life. The former commercial diver has plundered the deep for over fifty years, bringing to the surface anything that glittered — even gold.

In a shipping container near the water, Ray tends his museum of cannon, bottles, bells, swords, portholes and diving gear. He even still takes to the water in a 1900s diving suit.

Joe Crogan is a 26 years old student from Glasgow School of Art who always wears a rubbish denim waistcoat. Apart from his dubious choice of attire, his work is fresh and thoroughly entertaining.

Egor Kraft

Egor Kraft is a 24 year old artist & illustrator who divides his time between Moscow, St.Petersburg and cold Scandinavia. One of the founders of a creative trio called Dopludό Collective, the main themes of Kraft’s creative activity are conditionality of all boundaries, predominance of essence over existence and primacy of thought and desire before a matter.

His work was discovered via his submission to our Flickr group.

Colin Parker

When Colin Parker first adorned the shirt of Edinburgh College of Art Football Club, I was not aware that his feet were not the only talented part of our accomplished goal scorer.

Parker specialises in furniture and bespoke carpentry for both domestic and commercial clientele. With a particularly sensitive eye for detail, palette and finish, the experienced craftsman works mainly in and around the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, however his workshop is situated in the East Lothian countryside. This rural location is a welcome departure from the industrial units of the city.

Sarah Muirhead’s portraits grant compassion, complexity and capability to the much-maligned modern male. Men who are easy to write off as unshaven tattooed nʼer-do-wells become sympathetic small town heroes – and perceived threats turn into disarming confidantes. Employing biro, brand names and band T-shirts, Sarah haunts tattoo parlours, working menʼs clubs and pubs to find her subjects.

The Outsiders gallery in Newcastle is currently exhibiting a new body of her work until 3rd September 2011.

Outliers, Vol. I: Iceland

This October, a small group of filmmakers, photographers and musicians are setting out on a journey to explore the remote countryside of Iceland and document our experiences with the landscape, residents and traditions we encounter. The end result, a beautifully packaged box set of the film and companion soundtrack, will be released to backers of the project as a physical artifact of the unique and awe-inspiring experience.

The project — anchored by internationally renowned photographers Tim Navis + Kim Høltermand and aided by film collective Scenic and composer Deru — will be unique in its improvisational spirit.
