Slumdog Millionaire

I will make it no secret that I am a huge fan of the work of director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Sunshine), however, even I was wary of the plot of his latest movie Slumdog Millionaire. The film is about an illiterate slum kid from Mumbai, who goes on the local TV version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and comes up trumps.

On first impressions, I have to admit that the plot smacks of what could be perceived as a cheesy feel good movie, however, the initial brutal scenes make sure that you realise that this aint’ no fairytale. Slumdog Millionaire is in fact a brilliant film of shocking brutality, a romance with the backdrop of sexual abuse and a dream of wealth powered by crushing poverty.

I would not be surprised if an Oscar may be on the cards. Go see it

Alan Cook

Beautiful photography by Alan Cook. I also quite like his website interface.

Charlotte X. C. Sullivan

Charlotte X. C. Sullivan creates art by using an very interesting technique. She mixes ink with soapy water and allows the bubbles to dry on paper. This work is the perfect follow up to the photography, previously posted on hr, by Jason Tozer.

Amy Duggan

Duggan describes herself as a creator of creates original contemporary jewellery. We don’t feature much of this type of work but I think this is exceptional stuff. If your in Edinburgh over the next few weeks, she’s running a small exhibition in the Open Eye Gallery.

I love this branding and packaging created by Asylum for frozen yogurt brand Frolick. Check out the business card with the witty inclusion of a spoon. Über clever.

Running With The Beast

Running with the beast is the title track of zZz’s new album and Roel Wouters has created this music video. Brutal or enchanting, I’ll leave it for you to decide.
